The Journey So Far
Growing up in a large working-class family, Tim knew that getting a proper education was important. As he looked at different paths, “one thing was very clear to me,” he says. “Lawyers ran the world.” He received his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis University School of Law and went straight to work at an Edward Jones financial firm, never pausing along the way to practice law.
Early on, Tim was assigned to the account of, a well-known MLB pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Even though Tim was still in law school, as he reviewed the portfolios, he uncovered discrepancies that even a seasoned advisor might have overlooked. Discoveries like that helped Tim work his way up through the company until he was charged with opening the firm’s first Nashville office.
In early 2000, after nearly 20 years of experience in the industry, Tim formed CapWealth. Since opening its doors, CapWealth has successfully worked through the financial bubble, the housing market crash, and a global pandemic. Currently, CapWealth has grown to 16 employees and is recognized as a top advisory firm in Tennessee and the country by both Forbes and Barron’s magazine.

MgO Systems uses magnesium oxide cement to build safer, fire resistant, water resistant green homes. The company is also researching ways to take the hard to recycle plastics and reusing them in the magnesium cement taking something that is harming the environment and turning it into something that people can use for years to come and is green and non-harmful to the environment. It builds in every sector from residential to commercial and agricultural. Todd encourages all to be good stewards of the environment by using sustainable practices.
Educating People about Magnesium Oxide Cement
The chemistry to make Magnesium Oxide cement is very precise and if a company does not have high quality control methods in place one can get a bad batch. In the past due to lack of quality controls people have built with low quality magnesium cement which has caused problems and given Magnesium Oxide Cement a bad reputation. This perception is something MgO Systems considers important to fight against. The best way to overcome this perception is to educate the people about the product and show successful projects.
Preventing the Preventable Disasters
The construction industry hasn’t changed in over 50 years, and yet everyday people die from the fires or other disasters in their homes that could have been prevented. Its only recently that the standards are starting to become stricter and regulations harsher. Todd believes that it is important not to be complacent and prevent the preventable disasters.

Todd McKay advises aspiring entrepreneurs to find a good business mentor.  He also advises them to read or listen to business books, whenever they are in their car driving somewhere or exercising. He says that even if you are only paying half attention to them, you will still pick things up, and it will begin to change how you think. There are all kinds of business books out there and Todd advises them to find one book that interests them or find a reader who catches their attention and just listen to them whenever they can.

Kirk came up through the ranks of wireless and cyber technologies working with very large OEMs to tiny startups and every type of business in between. The challenges he faced were often unknown initially, but always came to the forefront as an opportunity to help his customers. When industrial companies decide to purchase products for their businesses they are often locked into a vendor for ten or twenty years. Over that time frame so much innovation happens, but the industrial customers often are well behind with regard to seeing innovation create operational efficiencies. However, over the past Five years or so as more companies looked for better ways of doing things and young engineers come into the marketplace, things have begun to change. Not at light speed but there is a ground swell.

Covid, for all the problems it created has done a lot for FreeWave in helping it change its culture and values. The company has always believed in paying a fair wage, taking care of its employees and customers, as well as providing world-class products. This has not changed nor will it ever. What has changed is the way we go about doing our jobs. FreeWave recognized immediately it manufacturing team was essential to the companies well-being. If the manufacturing team couldn’t build equipment, FreeWave would not have any equipment to sell.
Keeping this in mind, FreeWave Technologies moved its non-essential workers to their homes ensuring its manufacturing folks could continue working safely. It took a few weeks, but what it has shown is if given the chance our employees will do their work the way they want, they will get it done. FreeWave believes in its folks, trust they will raise their hands when they need help, but even more importantly, they do not need to be in the office to get high quality work done. Clear guidance to a self-directed team has shown FreeWave can continue to innovate under any circumstance.
