The education sector continues to grow, adapting to diverse student needs and shifting global standards. Language acquisition is key in shaping academic success, particularly for learners in multilingual environments. Schools worldwide implement structured language support to help students overcome barriers and enhance their proficiency.

Integrating technology, innovative teaching methodologies, and culturally responsive strategies has further strengthened language education. As institutions refine their approaches, they focus on creating inclusive classrooms where students can confidently express themselves. These advancements underscore the importance of equipping students with the necessary skills to thrive in a progressively interconnected world.

Mable Maria Newton, Head of ELL (English Learning Language), brings a student-focused approach to language education. Her leadership is defined by inclusivity, adaptability, and a deep understanding of diverse learning needs. With experience spanning multiple educational settings, she prioritizes empathy and cultural sensitivity in her teaching methodologies. Mable believes in developing confidence among students by bridging their prior knowledge with new learning experiences. Her ability to implement effective strategies ensures that learners acquire language skills and build self-assurance in their academic journey. Through collaboration with educators and curriculum refinement, Mable continues to shape a supportive and engaging learning environment.

GEMS Founders School—Al Mizhar remains committed to delivering high-quality language education through a structured and inclusive approach. The institution strongly focuses on developing comprehensive English language learning programs catering to students from diverse backgrounds. The school enhances instruction and personalizes learning experiences by integrating research- based methodologies and digital tools. Collaboration among faculty members ensures that students receive consistent support tailored to their proficiency levels. With a dedication to academic excellence, the school creates an environment where students are encouraged to embrace challenges and develop essential language skills that will serve them throughout their education and beyond.

Let’s explore Mable’s language development strategies for inclusive education:

Empowering Learners Across Continents

Mable’s inspiration to pursue teaching was deeply rooted in early interactions with students in India. Observing their boundless curiosity and creativity in primary classrooms was profoundly impactful. The joy of seeing children grasp new concepts, build confidence, and develop a love for learning solidified a passion for this profession.

Over the years, this inspiration has served as a guiding force. Teaching has become more than a career; it is a mission. Whether nurturing young minds in India or transitioning into secondary education in Qatar and now in Dubai, Mable’s belief in the power of education has only strengthened. Each phase of the journey, from teaching younger students to helping older students overcome language barriers, has been shaped by this early calling to inspire and empower learners.

Prioritizing Empathy and Cultural Sensitivity

Teaching across CBSE and British curriculums in multicultural environments has shaped Mable’s inclusive and adaptive teaching philosophy. Working in India, Qatar, and the UAE exposed Mable to diverse educational expectations, learning styles, and cultural perspectives. This diversity taught Mable to approach education with a global mindset.

For example, transitioning from CBSE’s structured methodology to the British curriculum’s focus on critical thinking required Mable to reframe instructional strategies. Similarly, engaging with students from varied linguistic and cultural backgrounds made Mable prioritize empathy and cultural sensitivity in teaching.

Mable realized the importance of building bridges between students’ prior knowledge and new learning, encouraging them to see their diverse backgrounds as assets rather than barriers. These experiences have enriched Mable’s practice and enabled the creation of classrooms where all students feel valued and motivated to succeed.

Recognized for Excellence in Education

The most rewarding aspect of her role is witnessing students’ transformations as they overcome language barriers and gain confidence in their abilities. As a non-native English speaker, Mable empathizes with their challenges and feels immense satisfaction in empowering them to thrive academically and socially. Seeing students flourish in their academic journeys is incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, Mable takes pride in developing and implementing effective ELL strategies that benefit individual students and influence the school’s overall approach to language instruction. The recognition of Mable’s work, such as the ‘Excellence in Education Award’ and ‘Gems Core Value Award,’ is gratifying. Still, the students’ daily victories truly validate the efforts.

Prioritizing Time Management in Education

Balancing leadership responsibilities with Mable’s passion for personalized instruction requires thoughtful prioritization and time management. As Whole School Head of ELL (English Learning Language), Mable oversees program implementation and collaborates with teachers to ensure effective language support. At the same time, Mable maintains direct involvement in classroom activities to stay connected with students’ needs.

She allocates specific times for classroom observations, mentoring teachers, and conducting workshops while also dedicating time to interact with students individually.

Strategies for Differentiated Instruction

Engagement among students from diverse backgrounds begins with creating an inclusive and supportive environment. Mable prioritizes the following strategies:

  • Differentiated Instruction: Tailoring lessons to accommodate varied proficiency levels ensures all students can access and engage with the curriculum.
  • Cultural Integration: Incorporating students’ cultural backgrounds into lessons helps them feel represented and valued. For instance, using literature and examples from different cultures enriches discussions and promotes inclusivity.
  • Integration of Technology: Using technology and digital tools to enhance ELL (English Learning Language) students’ learning while providing personalized learning experiences.
  • Scaffolded Support: Gradual progress is ensured by breaking down intricate tasks into manageable steps and providing language scaffolds, such as sentence starters or visual aids.
  • Feedback and Encouragement: Constructive feedback and consistent encouragement build confidence and motivate students to persevere. These strategies help students improve their language skills and develop a sense of belonging and self-assurance in the classroom.

Encouraging Cross-Departmental Coordination

Collaboration is central to Mable’s leadership style. She believes that a cohesive and well-supported team is essential for achieving shared goals and feels fortunate to work alongside outstanding colleagues at GEMS Founders School—Al Mizhar. As the Head of ELL (English Learning Language), Mable encourages collaboration through regular team meetings, cross-departmental coordination, professional development, and open communication. Mable ensures that collective efforts lead to meaningful student outcomes by focusing on teamwork and shared responsibility.

Strategies for Work-Life Balance

According to Mable, maintaining a work-life balance requires planning and self-discipline. She prioritizes tasks by setting clear goals and timelines, ensuring that essential responsibilities are addressed efficiently. Delegating tasks and trusting colleagues allows Mable to focus on high impact areas without becoming overwhelmed. Mable dedicates time to personal interests and family to recharge and maintain perspective. Activities such as cooking, traveling home, or spending quality time with loved ones help Mable stay energized and grounded.

Additionally, Mable views cultural and language learning initiatives as extensions of a passion for education and personal growth, making them a source of fulfillment.

Adapting Global Trends to School Context

Staying current with educational trends involves a combination of ongoing learning and professional networking. Mable actively participates in conferences to gain insights into emerging practices and innovations. Engaging with online communities and research journals and attending professional development courses informs Mable about the latest methodologies.

Additionally, Mable facilitates knowledge-sharing sessions to encourage a culture of learning within the team. By staying attuned to global trends and adapting them to the school’s context, Mable ensures that the ELL curriculum remains relevant and impactful.

Building Trust and Rapport with Students

Mable believes creating a positive and inclusive learning environment begins with empathy and respect for students’ experiences. She advises educators to build relationships that establish trust and rapport with students by showing genuine interest in their lives and aspirations. She also believes in celebrating diversity by recognizing and honoring each student’s unique cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Encourage a growth mindset by motivating students to embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and personal growth. Promote collaboration by creating opportunities for students to learn from and with one another, developing mutual respect and understanding. By adopting these practices, educators can create classrooms where all students feel empowered to achieve their full potential.

Vision for Excellence in Language Education

Mable’s vision for the ELL program at GEMS Founders School is to establish it as a model of excellence in language education. Mable aims to develop comprehensive resources and support systems to cater to a broader range of language learners, integrate technology, and use digital tools to enhance instruction while providing personalized learning experiences.

With the support of the GFM Senior Leadership Team, Mable aspires to strengthen teacher training and equip educators with strategies to support multilingual learners effectively. Additionally, Mable aims to prepare students to excel in an increasingly interconnected world by promoting intercultural communication skills.

In the long term, Mable envisions the program empowering students to excel academically and become confident, empathetic individuals who contribute meaningfully to society. By instilling a love for language and learning, limitless opportunities for their future success can be unlocked. Witnessing these students flourishing in their education and personal growth reaffirms Mable’s belief that language is not just a tool for communication but a bridge to opportunity and success.

From Struggles to Being a Successful Businesswoman and Sharing Lessons of Strength and Determination!

Transportation services have evolved beyond mere convenience; they now offer unique social experiences that transform how passengers navigate urban spaces. When people step into these vehicles, they often find themselves in spontaneous conversations, sharing laughter, and exchanging stories with strangers.

Recognizing this potential, some transportation providers have moved beyond simply getting people from point A to B—they are now crafting memorable experiences that linger in the minds of their passengers long after the ride ends. By fostering connections and a sense of community, these services have a significant impact in an increasingly divided world.

In the high-end fleet service sector, Shelly Castle, Founder of Impeccable Rideshare LLC, stands as a shining example of tenacity and innovation. Her journey has been filled with challenges that have shaped her into a resilient entrepreneur. She acknowledged family responsibilities early in life, which instilled a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial drive. After facing severe setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, including multiple job losses, she turned to driving to support herself and her family.

However, Shelly’s approach was far from ordinary. She transformed her vehicle into a lively, party-like atmosphere, making each ride feel like a celebration. This unique perspective not only made her services unforgettable but also brought joy to her passengers.

From those humble beginnings, Shelly established Impeccable Rideshare LLC, now a full-fledged limousine and party bus company in Houston, Texas. Her business reflects her passion for creating joyful experiences and providing opportunities for her community. What started as a rideshare journey has evolved into a high-end limousine and party bus fleet service, showing her growth from working in rideshare to becoming a proud owner of her own company.

Let’s know more about her journey:

The Journey of Shelly Castle: From Struggles to Success

Shelly was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where she navigated the complexities of a challenging family dynamic. With an older sister facing severe disabilities and a younger sister who was often spoiled, she found herself in the middle, taking on responsibilities at a young age. By age twelve, she began working to support her family, engaging in various jobs like lawn care and massage therapy. Despite the financial hardships and lack of resources, her parents did not own a car, she developed an entrepreneurial spirit early on.

Her determination to overcome adversity has shaped her into a resilient individual, ultimately leading her to become a successful entrepreneur. Her journey reflects her self-sufficiency and ambition, proving that even the toughest beginnings can lead to remarkable achievements.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Shelly’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. As a single mother during the tumultuous times of COVID-19, she faced significant challenges when she lost two of her three jobs. Devastated but undeterred, she turned to driving for Uber, which provided some income but was not enough to cover her expenses. Seeking stability, she took a position at the post office, but the job proved to be unfulfilling. Feeling trapped and unhappy, she made the courageous decision to quit.

Returning to rideshare driving, she found her passion. She worked the night shift, creating a vibrant atmosphere in her car that transformed each ride into a memorable experience. Her unique approach turned her service into a “party Uber,” attracting clients who appreciated the fun and lively environment she fostered. She became known for her ability to uplift spirits through Uber rides, positively impacting many lives along the way.

However, her world came crashing down when she faced false reports from passengers that led to her losing her rideshare job. Overwhelmed by despair, she questioned her purpose and sought guidance from a higher power. In response, she found renewed motivation and clarity.

This pivotal moment inspired her to establish Impeccable Rideshare LLC, a limousine and party bus service in Houston, Texas. Through this venture, she not only reclaimed her passion but also created opportunities for others in her community. Her story exemplifies how perseverance and faith can lead to new beginnings, proving that even in the darkest moments, there is always a path forward.

Embracing the Chaos

Shelly describes her entrepreneurial journey as a thrilling rollercoaster, where balance is often elusive. In the early days, she found herself engulfed in the chaos of starting her own business, recognizing that achieving a work-life balance was nearly impossible. Despite the emotional highs and lows, she views this tumultuous experience as incredibly rewarding and would not change a thing.

Currently single, she admits that her personal life has taken a backseat to her career ambitions. She expresses hope for finding love in the future but remains focused on her entrepreneurial path.

The dedication required to build her business has left little room for personal relationships, yet she embraces the challenge. For her, the journey of entrepreneurship is not just about success; it’s about growth and resilience in the face of adversity, proving that passion can fuel one’s purpose even amidst life’s uncertainties.

A Passionate Entrepreneur

Shelly embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship with unmatched passion and drive. She sees herself as the number one entrepreneur in the universe, fueled by a desire to inspire others. Despite the challenges and chaos that come with starting a business, she remains committed to her goals and refuses to give up.

Her relentless pursuit of success showcases her dedication to her craft and her belief in the transformative power of entrepreneurship. While she currently prioritizes her career over personal relationships, she remains hopeful for love in the future. Her journey reflects her dreams, proving that true passion can lead to remarkable achievements.

Driven by Purpose and Passion

Shelly’s passion for entrepreneurship is deeply rooted in her faith and sense of purpose. She believes that God has given her life and a mission, affirming that she is not finished yet. This conviction fuels her relentless drive to succeed, as she feels a responsibility to honor her purpose and not let herself or the universe down.

For Shelly, her work is everything; it is the core of her existence. She finds motivation in the recognition she receives, such as being featured in magazines, which inspires her to push harder and achieve more. The joy of seeing her accomplishments reinforces her determination to continue on this path.

She embraces the challenges of entrepreneurship with a winning mindset, declaring that she is not a quitter but a winner. Her journey reflects living out her legacy, driven by the belief that every effort contributes to a greater purpose in life.

Navigating Challenges Amidst the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Shelly’s business, presenting ongoing challenges. Despite the difficult economic climate, she remains determined to persevere. Recognizing that traditional methods may not suffice, she adopted a proactive approach by intensifying her networking efforts and hustling like never before.

Her passion for entrepreneurship drives her to continuously put herself out there, as this work represents everything she strives for in life. She refuses to give up, embodying a resilient spirit that motivates her to keep pushing forward. She recalls a client who told her, “You are too legit to quit,” reinforcing her commitment to her goals.

By focusing on building connections and enhancing her presence in the industry, she has managed to navigate the uncertainties brought on by the pandemic.

Strengths and Weaknesses on the Path to Success

Shelly attributes her success to several key strengths, including resilience, drive, and a strong work ethic. Her ability to market herself on social media and inspire others has helped her gain recognition in various magazines, allowing her to share her journey and motivate those around her.

However, she acknowledges certain weaknesses that pose challenges. A lack of energy and financial resources has hindered her progress, making it difficult to invest in essential tools for her business, such as a computer system.

Despite these obstacles, she views her weaknesses as opportunities for growth. By sharing her experiences, she hopes to provide valuable lessons for others facing similar struggles.

Celebrating Achievements and Accolades

Shelly has made remarkable strides in both her professional and personal life. She successfully launched her website and app with the support of

Mohanty, showcasing her commitment to innovation. This year alone, she has been featured in eleven magazines, including Business Insider, where she was recognized as Houston’s “Party on Wheels” and highlighted for working as a Lyft driver on Christmas Day.

Her accolades include being named one of the top 300 entrepreneurs in the world by 300 Inc. and being acknowledged as Houston’s most inspiring person in Voyage Houston. Additionally, she received honors from Lux Life Magazine as Houston’s number-one wedding limousine and party bus transportation company of the year, and she is set to be recognized as the 2024 Limousine and Party Bus Company of the Year by the North America Business Awards.

On a personal level, she credits her faith in God for giving her life and purpose, driving her to achieve these milestones.

Leadership Advice for Aspiring Leaders

Shelly encourages aspiring leaders to embrace the belief that they can achieve anything through faith, stating, “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” She emphasizes the importance of perseverance, urging individuals to never give up and to continually strive for their highest potential.

In her view, effective leadership involves treating people fairly and motivating others. Continuous learning and self-belief are crucial, as is the ability to listen and empathize with others’ experiences.

Below are the interview highlights:

Can you please introduce yourself and share your career journey?

I’m an entrepreneur and Human Resources Management Specialist with over 20 years of professional experience; of which 16 years in core Human Resource Management roles. With a proven ability in developing an HR department from the ground up and in continuously managing the HR operations of start-up/medium and larger sized companies.

I’m holding a strong command in core HR functions such as Recruitment, Learning & Development, Performance Management, Employee Retention, Payroll, Onboarding and Succession Planning, Policies & Procedures, International Mobility, Health & Safety, Legislation and Legal mediation, Strategic annual planning and budgeting, Annual Taxation and have helped many different types of organizations with their transformation.

Could you please briefly introduce your company and its inception story?

At Next Gen Foods, we believe a new era of food is coming. An era where we are actively thinking about how we eat, how our food impacts our health and the planet, and that is more delicious than ever before.

We don’t want anyone to have to change what they eat; we just want to innovate how we produce and procure our favorite foods. And that’s where uniquely inventive food technology and the explosive power of plants come in.

That’s the ethos behind Next Gen Foods, and we’re going big with our very first brand: TiNDLE. Ridiculously good chicken made from plants. Launched in 2020 and already being savored around the globe, TiNDLE is a dining experience that will make you wonder why we ever needed birds to make chicken.

On top of its unparalleled taste and texture, TiNDLE has the pan-cuisine versatility that chefs look for— which not a lot of big-name chicken producers can claim.

We have expanded our product portfolio in the past 3 years, which is now available in foodservices and retail stores across Europe, the US, and Asia Pacific. We are operational in 6 markets globally at the moment, and also expanded our product category, with plant based dairy products on top of plant-based chicken and continue to grow and thrive.

Can you share some key milestones in your career that have significantly shaped your leadership style and approach to HR?

After moving to Singapore, I got the opportunity to familiarize myself with the Asian landscape, which has been a great milestone for me, as I have helped different types of organizations in the past with their growth, restructuring, and operational journey across Europe and the US, including short-term oversea assignments.

Working in Asia is completely different from various perspectives, not just employment law and regulations, which allowed me to become a global HR leader that now covers the full spectrum of HR across Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific.

During my first opportunity with Glue Up in Singapore, a SaaS Tech start-up company that was originally based and operational in China and wanted to become a globally successful company, I’ve helped them to not only build up the HR function from scratch to support a global operational foundation holistically, but ensure a solid operational ground through which the company was able to expand and get operational from originally 20 countries to 60 countries during my 3 years tenure with the company.

What do you believe is the most essential role of a CHRO in an organization, especially in today’s rapidly changing work environment?

To stay as closely aligned to the business plans and changes they may need to incorporate or adapt to, as well as to their people. Ensure that both sides are thought through holistically and solidly enough to cover short- and long-term objectives.

How have you adapted your HR strategies to address the challenges posed by the pandemic and the evolving workforce?

Yes, absolutely, interesting enough, I started working on a new way of working and a flexible hybrid or remote work setting before the pandemic even started as part of our global mobility and growth plans; while forming a solid operational foundation for the company, this came all together at the right time, before the pandemic even started!

However, in my opinion, it’s an essential need for global companies or companies that are looking into expanding. Obviously, there were other concerns as well that occurred during the pandemic to manage for a short period of time.

How do you measure the effectiveness of your HR initiatives, and what metrics do you prioritize?

I wouldn’t want to call it my HR initiatives, as they are forming or coming together based on business needs and after careful consideration with all your internal and external stakeholders to come to the best option at that moment of time. I always try to implement things for the long term with the flexibility for growth and change, but I would never execute initiatives through a 2-eye principle only.

What are your top three priorities for the HR department this year, and how do they align with the overall business strategy?

At the moment, these are operational efficiency, retention management, and DE&I. These 3 are cornerstones for a good and healthy core business through any stage of growth or business optimization.

How do you approach talent management and retention in a competitive job market?

Invest in your people! L&D is still and, in my opinion, will always be ranked highly as part of retention management; specifically, Millennials and Gen Z would prefer L&D over a good base salary and benefits.

Various studies and questionnaires were done and continue to happen to look at companies’ attrition rates and measures. L&D is still ranked in the Top 3 amongst compensation & benefits.

Can you discuss the importance of collaboration between HR and other departments and how you facilitate that collaboration?

It is absolutely critical. Whether you are a small or large company, there is a misconception that large companies think it’s difficult to keep alignment and communication between departments flowing, which it is not, as it really comes down to your internal organizational culture and structure.

That starts from the beginning. I believe over-structuring is impacting your internal collaboration and work flows a lot. It is essential for a healthy company that goes through challenges, and even without, to review your internal structure at least once a year and question how effective your workflows and operations are.

Good collaboration between internal stakeholders increases your overall Productivity, Innovation and Adaptability across your functions, which are key requirements within an organization.

What role does technology play in your HR strategy, and how do you leverage it to enhance employee experience?

A lot, HR is heavily dependent on having support tools in place to help with all the operational day-to-day streams to cover each and every aspect of the HR spectrum, from onboarding to offboarding or retiring. There are a lot of tools on the market to help set up workflows and create visibility and support for the HR team, however, it can be a challenge to find the right ones that fit your company’s goals or needs while implementing them in a way to leave room for growth or change.

Employee experience is a good measure to leverage success through, but it should not be the only one, as the business will undergo change no matter how small or large a company is. It’s important to cover its succession from a 360-degree window. With AI coming into the workplace, it’s exciting to see how companies will start to leverage this as extra support in their day-to-day operations across functions and departments.

What are some common misconceptions about the role of HR that you would like to address?

Most organizations and employees have seen the shift in the HR function, which started along digitalization and became more radical during the pandemic when there became a sudden urge for companies to change their work strategy and policies. The HR function became less traditional as a support function only and more of a decision-making sweet spot for companies and their executives to work and align with before defining their business plan, and I’m truly hoping more companies include their HR executives in the final decision-making process when it comes to long- and short-term business plans.

To execute a successful business plan, the executive team needs to be aware of what is playing on the ground, day-to-day; without that detailed insight or analytics on a company’s pain points, you can’t match or try to match the road map you want to set your company’s success on.

What advice would you give to aspiring HR leaders looking to make a significant impact in their organizations?

Impact can be looked at from so many different perspectives, whether it’s a personal or business impact. It’s important not just for HR professionals to always try to stay open-minded, question yourself as every situation and phase is different, evaluate and collaborate professionally with internal and external stakeholders, stay alert on what is happening in and outside of the organization, try and stay on top of analytics and trends, and last but not least, listen to your gut feeling. Decisions we tend to make with our minds do not always turn out to be the best ones in the long run.

As the financial model shifts towards digitalization, she recognizes the critical need for robust compliance frameworks that not only protect investors but also encourage innovation.

Inspired by the complexities of regulatory environments, Cara is motivated to contribute positively by developing comprehensive compliance strategies that balance security and growth. Her assurance to safeguarding against illicit activities while promoting a forward-thinking approach underscores her role as a leader in piloting the future of finance.

Taking the Lead in Compliance with Virtual Assets

Provenance was proven to address the increasing demand for specialized compliance services within the virtual assets industry. Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer Cara has identified a significant challenge: many industry veterans often lack practical insights into how regulators evaluate virtual asset services and may not possess the in-house expertise needed to effectively assess and manage associated perils.

To bridge this gap, Provenance has created comprehensive service lines encompassing compliance, internal audit, risk management, and advisory services. Their focus is on developing fitted compliance frameworks and risk management solutions specifically for virtual asset funds, managers, service providers, and other stakeholders in this rapidly evolving sector.

With a collective experience of over 75 years in traditional legal, accounting, and compliance services, Provenance collaborates with recognized leaders to craft innovative solutions for virtual asset ventures worldwide. Under her leadership, the firm is dedicated to empowering clients to steer the complexities of this model with confidence and integrity.

Knowledge of VASP Regulation Adherence

She has played an important role in assisting Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) in navigating the complexities of the new legislative and regulatory frameworks. At Provenance, she has supported digital asset enterprises in transitioning their operations to align with specific regulatory requirements. Through her work, Cara has conducted regulatory reviews of clients’ Compliance Frameworks, establishing need precedents and benchmarks for newly launching VASPs.

As a strong advocate for electronic verification in KYC processes, Cara oversaw the vendor assessment and selection process to boost a regulated entity’s client due diligence. By transitioning from the cumbersome method of requiring certified copies of all documents—which introduced significant delays, consumed extensive human resources, and created customer friction—to a more efficient electronic process, she significantly improved operational efficiency.

This transformation allowed compliance analysts to focus on value-added analysis and a deeper understanding of the business, ultimately increasing the overall compliance era.

Entire Success Plan

Cara adopts a widespread strategy that encompasses continuous learning, data analysis, and proactive stakeholder engagement. She stays updated on emerging trends through active participation in industry conferences, webinars, and networking events. This includes the adoption of advanced compliance tools and software that streamline processes and improve service offerings, assuring her competitiveness in an eternally growing reform.

She features a detailed lesson: don’t linger on decisions, gather and understand the facts and if there is still subjectivity, be guided by your instincts.  Don’t be afraid to be authoritative.  Decisions have two outcomes, right or wrong, most will be right but it’s in the wrong decisions that you learn the lasting lessons. Cara’s approach blends instinct, structure, and action, permitting entrepreneurs to travel through challenges with resilience.

Leveraging Financial Skills to Foster Governance in Non-Profits!

At a time when businesses are continually being pushed to adapt in order to keep up with turbulence and increased expectations, the challenge is to identify inspirational leaders that can lead their teams to innovate and adapt. In the midst of all this madness is Lisa Volekaert, a bright light of hope and transformation. Serving as a dedicated Volunteer Director of the Cayman Islands Humane Society, she illustrates precisely what visionary leadership is when she integrates her skills in the workplace with a very profound sense of animal welfare.

Lisa has over three decades of experience in audit, taxation, and corporate governance. Under the guidance of its Board of Directors and Operations Manager, the Humane Society has been undergoing a shift toward fostering an environment where creativity and compassion intersect.

Lisa’s leadership style is characterized by her ability to empower her team and the community. She instills a culture of responsibility and proactive engagement, encouraging individuals to take ownership of their roles in promoting responsible pet ownership and sustainable practices. Her dedication inspires those around her, creating a ripple effect that positively impacts countless lives.

Through her commitment, Lisa not only addresses the immediate needs of animals but also cultivates a long-term vision for their welfare. In doing so, she embodies the essence of visionary leadership, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth and inspiring others to join her mission for a better future.

Let’s discover her journey ahead!

Lisa’s Professional Travel

Lisa began her career in public accounting, specializing in audit, accounting, and taxation, which provided her with a strong foundation in financial analysis and regulatory compliance. Over the years, she transitioned into fund administration, where she worked closely with clients to ensure proper governance, operations, and reporting.

Approximately 20 years ago, Lisa took on the role of independent director, allowing her to offer strategic and fiduciary oversight for investment-related entities. In addition to her corporate responsibilities, she serves as a director for the Cayman Islands Humane Society, the only animal shelter in the Cayman Islands.

This experience has deepened her understanding of governance besides the unique challenges faced by non-profit organizations. Lisa’s motivation to serve in these capacities stems from her desire to contribute to causes and businesses that create a lasting, positive impact in both the corporate world and her community.

A Commitment to Animal Welfare

Lisa serves as a director at the Cayman Islands Humane Society, an important organization that has been a foundation of the community for over 50 years. As the only shelter in the Cayman Islands, the Humane Society is dedicated to rescuing, protecting, and finding loving families for the homeless cats and dogs in the region.

The organization’s mission centers around nurturing a society that values animal rights and treats all creatures with respect and kindness. They strive to promote education on responsible pet ownership, fostering community collaboration to create a balanced ecosystem.

The Humane Society aims to end cruelty, overlook, and abuse while addressing the critical issue of overpopulation and its environmental impact. Many residents remain unaware of the importance of spaying and neutering pets, which exacerbates the overpopulation problem.

Operating on a limited budget, the shelter relies heavily on donations and the tireless efforts of its dedicated staff and volunteers. Despite these challenges, Lisa and her team are resolute in their promise to make a difference, continually working to raise awareness and secure sustainable funding to help as many animals as possible.

Effective Governance: A Vision for Impact

Lisa has always been inspired by the notion that effective governance can create a tangible difference, not just for shareholders but for the entire organization and the community it serves. Her early career in audit and taxation provided her with a deep understanding of the inner workings of businesses, particularly in terms of financial sustainability and regulatory compliance.

Later, her experience in fund administration exposed her to the complexities of managing large, multifaceted structures and entities. These experiences have shaped her approach to leadership, emphasizing responsiveness, transparency, strong ethical standards, and a long-term perspective.

Whether in a corporate boardroom or at the Humane Society, Lisa believes that transformation occurs when strategy aligns with clear governance and makes certain that the right people and resources are in place to execute that vision.

Lisa’s Mission

Lisa has been at the facade of a significant transformation at the Cayman Islands Humane Society, which is grappling with severe financial strain and a growing pet overpopulation watershed. As the only shelter on the island for over 50 years, the organization has faced rising operational costs and difficulties in securing donations, as both individuals and businesses prioritize their own financial concerns.

A dire issue has been the influx of stray and homeless animals. This situation has stretched the shelter’s limited resources thin, imposing difficult decisions about the number of animals they can care for.

To tackle these challenges, Lisa and the team have implemented a multipronged strategy. In the short term, they are optimizing resources and diversifying fundraising efforts through outreach campaigns, social media drives, and a 50/50 raffle initiative, while actively seeking grants for additional funding. Long-term, they are focused on raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of spaying and neutering, understanding that changing community behaviors requires time and persistence.

The biggest challenge remains balancing the immediate needs of the animals with financial realities. Lisa aims to maintain transparency with the community about the shelter’s limitations while seeking consistent support and innovative fundraising solutions to ensure the sustainability of the organization.

Devotion to Endless Learning

Lisa understands that staying ahead of the curve requires a proactive approach to constant learning. She selects staying informed about regulatory changes, technological advancements, and industry trends through diligent research, attending conferences, and nurturing a strong network of peers. This faithfulness enables her to route her field with confidence and intuition.

Civilization of Innovation: Lisa’s Approach

Innovation is a key driver of transformation, particularly in the current speedily embryonic business setting. Lisa urges a polish of innovation by raising an open mindset, where team members feel empowered to propose new ideas, even if those ideas challenge the status quo.

For instance, in her work with the Cayman Islands Humane Society, she has encouraged the implementation of new approaches to fundraising and outreach, such as utilizing social media and digital platforms to raise awareness and increase donations.

Through creating a safe space for experimentation and learning, Lisa warrants that her team feels supported when taking calculated risks, ultimately driving meaningful change within the organization.

Balancing Immediate

Lisa understands that balancing short-term results with long-term vision is one of the greatest challenges in leadership. In the organizations she collaborates with, she settles clear communication and alignment between immediate goals and broader strategic objectives.

For example, at the Humane Society, Lisa has focused on urgent fundraising efforts to keep the shelter operational while simultaneously developing long-term strategies, such as community education on spaying and neutering, to address the root causes of the stray animal problem.

The Ideal Team Member

Lisa seeks human beings who embody adaptability, ethics, and proactive problem-solving skills. In vigorous and resource-constrained environments, such as the Cayman Islands Humane Society, she believes it is necessary for team members to think on their feet and remain dedicated to the mission.

Lisa underlines the importance of mentorship, open communication, and hands-on training as fundamental elements in developing talent, whether within a corporate or non-profit framework.

Approach to Business Transformation

Lisa accentuates that the success of business transformation is typically assessed through a blend of financial and operational metrics. In her corporate roles, she focuses on performance measures, regulatory compliance, and operational metrics as key indicators of success.

At the Cayman Islands Humane Society, Lisa features that success is gauged by the number of animals rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed, alongside the level of community engagement and fundraising support.

In both contexts, she values qualitative feedback from stakeholders as highly as quantitative metrics, recognizing that it provides a deeper understanding of the broader impact of their efforts.

Directing Difficult Decisions

The Humane Society recently faced a tough decision where the shelter was overwhelmed by a surge in stray and homeless pets. With rising costs for basics and decreasing donations, the team had to choose between continuing full operations, venturing unsustainable finances, or reducing intake to maintain quality of care.

After carefully reviewing financial data and exploring funding options like emergency drives and grants, the team decided to temporarily limit intake and prioritize serious cases and increased efforts to find homes for existing animals and emphasized public education on spaying and neutering to prevent further issues.

Though difficult, this decision was made with the animals’ well-being and the shelter’s long-term sustainability in mind. This balanced approach reflects her devotion to overcoming these challenges and expanding the shelter’s capacity in the future.

The Importance of Open Communication

Lisa spotlights that open communication is essential, especially during periods of change. She assures that communication flows in both directions, advocating that leadership should not only provide instructions but also actively listen to feedback from the team.

For Lisa, transparency is key—whether it concerns financial performance, strategic direction, or day-to-day operations. This approach looks after a sense of ownership and teamwork among team members, even when resources are limited.

The Path to Effective Governance

She makes a point of the importance of strong governance and honorable leadership in driving transformation. She recognizes that change does not occur overnight; it demands both a strategic vision and practical implementation. Lisa advises patience and a steadfast focus on long-term goals while remaining agile enough to adapt to evolving circumstances.

One of her key lessons is that true leadership is rooted in service—whether to shareholders, employees, or the community. Giving to Lisa, a leader’s role is to facilitate growth and success for others rather than pursuing personal gain.

The technology industry is marked by its relentless Tdrive for innovation, with companies constantly pushing the boundaries to meet the evolving needs of businesses and consumers. This sector, encompassing everything from IT services to cutting-edge software solutions, is a growing field where staying ahead requires not just technical prowess but also a deep understanding of market trends and customer demands.

The ability to identify gaps and create solutions that bridge those gaps is crucial in this competitive environment. This industry demands agility, creativity, and a forward-thinking approach to solve complex challenges and deliver value.

Tonya Turrell, Founder and CEO of The Launchpad, demonstrates these qualities. As an entrepreneur driven by a passion for independence and creativity, she has carved out a unique path that reflects her commitment to innovation and problem-solving. Tonya’s leadership is characterized by her focus on cultivating an environment where creativity thrives and solutions are encouraged and tailored to meet real-world demands. Her journey has seen her overcome significant challenges to shape a business that addresses the specific needs of the technology sector, ensuring that businesses can thrive with the right tools and strategies.

Founded by Tonya and Co-founded by Jacob Kapostins, CTO, The Launchpad is a company that embodies this approach, offering solutions that are designed to streamline IT procurement processes. By positioning itself as a matchmaker within the tech industry, The Launchpad ensures that businesses can find the most suitable technology solutions without the hassle of sifting through mismatched options. The Launchpad ensures that businesses can find the most suitable tech solutions without the hassle of sifting through mismatched options or being inundated with unwanted outreach.

The company’s commitment to innovation, client-focused strategies, and strong industry insights set it apart as a leader in its field. Through The Launchpad, Tonya has created a platform that addresses current industry needs and anticipates future trends, providing businesses with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly complex technological environment.

Let’s explore Tonya’s visionary leadership in the technology industry:

Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Tonya’s motivation to become an entrepreneur was deeply rooted in a desire for freedom and fulfillment. Early on, she realized that the traditional path of working for someone else wasn’t going to satisfy her need for creativity, independence, and impact. She wanted to build something that was uniquely hers, where she could fully express her talents, passions, and vision. Her journey as a founder and CEO has been anything but conventional, which adds to the color and vibrancy of her story.

She didn’t start with a clear intention of becoming a CEO; rather, her career path was motivated by her desire to solve real, tangible problems and fill a gap that she saw. It’s a journey that began with her own struggles and challenges. Having been in the B2B technology lead generation space for more than 25 years, she found herself constantly frustrated by the gap between technology lead generation and “demand creation” campaigns and the actual needs of businesses and IT buyers.

This sparked her entrepreneurial spirit. She saw a need for a more tailored approach, something that could genuinely help businesses thrive without the hassle of navigating through mismatched solutions. That’s why she founded The Launchpad, aiming to transform the IT procurement process by acting like a matchmaker in the tech industry.

What really drove her was not just the business opportunity but a deeper, more personal motivation. She experienced bankruptcy after a spectacular failure in her first business, which was both a low point and a pivotal moment for her. It taught her resilience, the importance of financial literacy, and the power of a positive mindset. These lessons were invaluable as she went on to build another business from 2011 to 2015, which became a massive success. This venture culminated in a successful exit when she sold the business in 2015.

The Launchpad is not being built after a failure; rather, it is being built on the coattails of this significant success. Her previous accomplishments and the insights gained from overcoming challenges have shaped her approach to business and leadership. She now emphasizes innovation, empathy, and a relentless pursuit of solutions that genuinely serve her clients, leveraging her proven track record to drive future success.

Every step of this journey has been about more than just building a business; it’s been about creating a platform that empowers others, solves real problems, and champions the kind of innovation that makes a tangible difference in people’s lives. As a CEO, she is driven by the potential to impact and uplift, fostering an environment where creativity and solutions thrive. This is what gets her up in the morning — the chance to turn challenges into opportunities not just for herself but for everyone her business touches.

  • Fostering Collaboration: She believes that the best ideas and solutions come from collaborative efforts. She encourages open communication and cross-functional teamwork, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard and valued.
  • Inclusivity: Diversity of thought and experience is crucial for innovation. She leads with a commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that their team reflects diverse perspectives and backgrounds, which enhances their creativity and problem-solving capabilities.
  1. Adaptability and Resilience
  • Embracing Change: In the fast-paced tech industry, change is constant. She leads with a flexible and adaptable mindset, encouraging her team to stay open to new ideas and ready to pivot when necessary.
  • Resilience: Tonya instills a sense of resilience in her team, emphasizing the importance of learning from setbacks and using them as opportunities for growth. This approach helps them to remain steadfast and even innovative in the face of challenges.

Proactive Approach to Continuous Learning

According to Tonya, staying ahead of emerging trends requires a proactive and multifaceted approach. First and foremost, Tonya and her team prioritize continuous learning. The tech industry evolves quickly, so they make it a point to stay informed by regularly reading industry publications, attending conferences, and participating in relevant workshops.

Her CTO and Co-founder, Jacob Kapostins, is really on top of this as well. This not only keeps them updated on the latest technologies and methodologies but also allows them to anticipate shifts in the market. Networking is another key strategy.

She actively engages with other industry leaders, innovators, and thought leaders. These connections often provide early insights into emerging trends and offer different perspectives that can inspire new ideas or approaches. Collaboration with others in the field—whether through formal partnerships or informal discussions—can also lead to innovative solutions that keep them at the cutting-edge.

At The Launchpad, her team cultivates a culture of innovation and experimentation. She encourages her team to think creatively and explore new technologies and ideas without fear of failure. This environment not only nurtures innovation but also ensures that they’re constantly experimenting with and refining new concepts that can give them a competitive edge.

Additionally, she keeps a close eye on their customers’ needs and behaviors. By understanding their evolving challenges and desires, they can adapt their offerings to better serve them and anticipate where the market is headed. Customer feedback is invaluable in guiding their innovation efforts and ensuring that they’re not just following trends but setting them.

Lastly, strategic planning plays a crucial role. Tonya regularly evaluates companies’ business strategies to ensure they align with where the industry is moving. This involves not just reacting to trends as they emerge but also positioning The Launchpad to lead in those areas. By combining continuous learning, strong industry networks, a culture of innovation, customer focus, and strategic foresight, she can keep The Launchpad ahead of emerging trends in the tech sector.

Guiding Principles for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those looking to make a mark in the tech industry, Tonya’s advice centers around a few key principles that have guided her throughout her journey.

Tonya states, “First, start with a clear vision. Understand what you want to achieve and why it matters to you. Your vision is your north star; it will guide your decisions and keep you focused when challenges arise. In the tech industry, where change is constant and competition is fierce, having a strong, compelling vision can set you apart and give you the resilience to push through tough times.”

Next, Tonya suggests embracing continuous learning and adaptability. The tech industry evolves rapidly, and what’s cutting-edge today can become obsolete tomorrow. Stay curious, keep learning, and be open to pivoting when necessary. This mindset will help aspiring entrepreneurs stay ahead of the curve and turn challenges into opportunities.

Tonya advises them, “Surround yourself with people who know more than you do in areas where you might not be as strong, and never stop seeking knowledge. Build a strong network. Relationships are invaluable in any industry, but they are especially crucial in tech. Connect with mentors, peers, and potential collaborators who can offer guidance, support, and fresh perspectives. The right network can open doors, provide critical insights, and even save you from making costly mistakes.”

Tonya believes aspiring entrepreneurs must focus on solving real problems. The most successful tech companies are those that address real, pressing issues with innovative solutions.

Her other advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is, “Before you build a product or service, deeply understand the problem you’re solving. Engage with your target market early and often, and let their feedback guide your development process. A user-centered approach increases the likelihood that what you’re building will resonate with the market and have a meaningful impact.”

Tonya suggests not being afraid to fail. Failure is a natural part of entrepreneurship. In fact, it’s often where the greatest lessons are learned. Embrace failure as a stepping stone rather than a setback. She suggests aspiring entrepreneurs analyze what went wrong, learn from it, and apply those lessons as they move forward. The ability to persist in the face of failure is what separates successful entrepreneurs from those who give up too soon.

Tonya emphasizes “prioritizing your mindset and energy. Entrepreneurship, particularly in tech, can be incredibly demanding. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and neglect your mental and physical well-being. However, maintaining a positive, growth-oriented mindset and managing your energy is critical to sustaining long-term success. Take care of yourself, build habits that support your well-being, and stay connected to your “why.”

Lastly, Tonya advises executing relentlessly. Ideas are abundant, but execution is what turns those ideas into reality. She highlights, “Be disciplined in your approach, break down your goals into actionable steps, and consistently move forward. Remember, it’s not about getting everything perfect from the start but about making progress and iterating along the way.”

“By staying true to your vision, being adaptable, building strong relationships, focusing on real problems, embracing failure, managing your energy, and executing with discipline, you’ll position yourself to not only make a mark in the tech industry but also create something truly impactful,” Tonya states.

The mortgage industry is undergoing a profound shift as women take center stage, using technology to create more accessible and transparent processes for homebuyers, especially first-time buyers and underrepresented communities. These trailblazing female professionals are proving their necessity in making the industry more equitable and innovative for everyone.

With a strong culture of mentorship and advocacy, women empower the next generation to rise and thrive, proving they are necessary to the industry’s evolution and making it more equitable and innovative for everyone.

Andrea Glasgow, Sales Director at Hampshire Trust Bank (HTB), is at the forefront of this transformation. With a strong culture of mentorship and advocacy, she empowers the next generation to rise and thrive in this traditionally male-dominated field.

Glasgow’s approach reflects a broader culture at HTB that prioritizes mentorship and advocacy, empowering the next generation of female professionals. By fostering strong relationships with brokers, she helps them manage the complexities of the mortgage market, providing bespoke propositions that address the unique challenges faced by clients.

As women continue to break down barriers in the mortgage industry, companies like HTB are proving that diversity not only enhances innovation but also creates a more equitable landscape for all. By championing female leadership, HTB is not just participating in the industry’s evolution; it is leading the charge towards a more inclusive future.

Below are the interview highlights:

Can you please introduce yourself and share your career journey?

I started out as a Cashier at Chelsea Building Society at 20 years old. It was a great learning ground, I got to know the basics of finance and, more importantly, how to connect with customers. After that, I was headhunted by Barclays to be a Personal Banker, which was a step up and gave me a good taste of what a career in banking could offer.

I then became a Premier Banking Manager, where I really learned the importance of managing relationships and thinking strategically. But the real turning point for me was when I joined Castle Trust, and that’s when my journey in Specialist Mortgages really began. I was fortunate to work alongside Alex Upton, my biggest cheerleader and mentor.

She saw something in me that I hadn’t even seen in myself, and that’s when things really started to take off. It wasn’t just about understanding specialist lending; it was about building a team that supports each other and always delivers for our clients.

Could you please briefly introduce your company and its inception story?

We’re a specialist BTL lender that relaunched in 2018, and since then, we’ve grown our balance sheet from £160 million to £2.2 billion. That kind of growth doesn’t just happen overnight. It’s down to the hard work, commitment, and smart thinking from our whole team.

What sets us apart is that we’re not just about the products; we’re about the service too. We’ve put a lot into building a team that genuinely cares about delivering the best for our brokers and clients, and that’s made all the difference in a competitive market.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that significantly shaped your path in the mortgage industry?

One of the biggest turning points for me was leaving the corporate world and jumping into the Specialist Mortgages Market. I remember it all started with a simple Google search. I found a recruiter who specialized in BDM roles, picked up the phone for a bit of advice, and the next thing I knew, I was placed with Castle Trust.

That move changed everything for me. It showed me that sometimes, you’ve just got to trust your gut and take a leap, even when you’re not quite sure where you’ll land.

What motivated you to pursue a leadership role within the mortgage sector, and how has your journey been as a woman in this industry?

I’ve always been driven by the idea of making a difference. That’s what pushed me to take on a leadership role. I wanted to build a team where everyone felt they could bring their best to the table.

My team doesn’t work for me; we work together, side by side. There’s nothing I would ask them to do that I wouldn’t do myself. Being a woman in this industry has its challenges, but I’ve never let that hold me back.

For me, it’s about creating an environment where every salesperson feels they can grow—both professionally and personally. It’s about showing that leadership isn’t about a title; it’s about how you lift others up.

Who have been your role models or mentors throughout your career, and how have they influenced your leadership style?

That’s an easy one, Alex Upton. She’s an absolute powerhouse in specialist mortgages. Her management style is something I’ve always looked up to; she’s always there, no matter what. Alex believed in me when no one else did, and that’s something I’ll never forget.

She taught me that being a leader isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being there to guide, support, and trust your team. That’s a lesson I carry with me every day.

As a leader, what core values do you prioritize in your organization, and how do they reflect in your team’s culture?

For me, it comes down to fairness, reward, recognition, being approachable, and staying personable. It’s not just about saying it; it’s about showing it every day. Fairness means giving everyone a fair shot, no favourites, just opportunities for those who put in the work.

Reward and recognition are key because when someone does a great job, you need to let them know. Being approachable and personable means that no one is off-limits; everyone should feel comfortable coming to me with anything. These values help create a culture where people feel valued and motivated.

What strategies have you implemented to empower other women in your organization and the broader mortgage industry?

I’ve made it a point to mentor women in the company and be a role model for others in the mortgage market. Empowerment isn’t about big gestures; it’s in the small, everyday actions. I’m involved in women’s finance events and networking opportunities because it’s about being visible and showing what’s possible. If we want more women to step up, they need to see others doing it.

Can you discuss a challenge you faced as a leader and how you overcame it? What lessons did you learn from that experience?

Every leader faces challenges, especially when managing a team. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is knowing when to step back and take a breath. Sometimes, when things get intense, the best thing you can do is get some fresh air, maybe sleep on it, and come back with a clearer head. It’s about not reacting in the moment but taking the time to make the right call for everyone involved.

What trends do you foresee shaping the mortgage industry in the coming years, particularly regarding women’s roles?

I’m excited to see a new generation of sales leaders coming up, many of whom I’ve worked with or mentored over the years. There’s definitely more support and recognition for women now, but we’ve still got a way to go.

We need to find ways to help women balance having a career and a family without having to choose between them. It’s not about gender; it’s about talent and self-belief. Companies that get this will see more women leading the way.

How do you believe the mortgage industry can better support and promote female leadership?

It’s all about the culture of the company. Leaders need to set the right example and make sure there’s room for everyone to grow and succeed. It’s not just about giving women a seat at the table; it’s about making sure they’ve got a voice there too.

What do you consider your most significant achievement in your career to date, and why does it hold such importance for you?

Being appointed as Sales Director, getting onto the B&C Power List, and being named an Elite Woman, all in 12 months, are all great achievements. But for me, my biggest achievement is my team. Seeing them navigate a tough UK mortgage market and come out stronger on the other side is what I’m most proud of. It’s great to have personal success, but there’s nothing like seeing your team thrive.

How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life, and what advice would you give to others striving for that balance?

I make sure to keep a healthy lifestyle, exercise every morning at 5 am, walk my dog, and focus on my spiritual wellbeing. I love my job and the business I work for, but I also believe in doing what makes you feel good, even if that means checking in outside of office hours. My advice? Find what keeps you centred and don’t worry about what others think. It’s not about a perfect balance; it’s about finding what works for you.

What are your aspirations for the future, both personally and for your organization, in terms of advancing women in the mortgage industry?

I want to see more women stepping into this industry and thriving. I want to be a part of that, whether it’s through recruitment, mentoring, or just being the kind of leader that people want to work for. It’s about building a future where more women feel empowered to lead and know they belong at the top.

Managing the complexities of credit management can feel like an uphill battle, especially when your credit score dictates your financial opportunities. Whether it’s securing a mortgage, landing your dream job, or obtaining low-interest loans, a high credit score is essential. Meet Victoria Coster, the imaginative CEO of Credit Fix Solutions, who is transforming how Australians approach credit repair.

Founded in 2014, Credit Fix Solutions stands out as a ray of hope for those struggling with their credit scores. Victoria’s journey began as a single mother determined to create a better life for her family. Today, she leads a team that empowers clients to improve their credit ratings through personalized strategies and financial education. Under her guidance, the company has become a trusted partner for mortgage brokers and clients alike, pioneering a “no win, no fee” model that prioritizes fairness and transparency.

Victoria’s passion to education is evident; she frequently engages with brokers, offering training sessions to enhance their understanding of credit reporting. This collaborative approach has earned her accolades, including recognition as a finalist in the 2023 FBAA Awards for Industry Champion of the Year.

At Credit Fix Solutions, a high credit score is more than just a number, it’s a pathway to financial freedom. With Coster at the helm, clients are not only fixing their credit but also answering new opportunities for a brighter future.

Below are the interview highlights:

Can you please introduce yourself and share your career journey?

I’m Victoria Coster, CEO and founder of Credit Fix Solutions and Director of Credit Fix Lawyers. I moved from the UK to Western Sydney in 2001 and spent two years working in pubs.

In 2003, I transitioned to mortgage processing and later to mortgage broking in 2007. After the GFC hit, I shifted to credit repair, working in the industry for three years before founding Credit Fix Solutions in 2014.

Could you please briefly introduce your company and its inception story?

When I founded Credit Fix Solutions in 2014, I was dissatisfied with the upfront fees charged by other credit repair companies, as success in credit repair couldn’t be guaranteed.

So, I created a no-win, no-fee model. I started with 40 local mortgage brokers in Western Sydney and have since expanded to work with around 9,000 finance brokers across Australia.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your career that significantly shaped your path in the mortgage industry?

In 2015, a mortgage broker told me I needed to promote my credit repair services to all brokers, highlighting their importance. At the time, as a single mother with limited resources, I had no clear path for business growth.

This moment led me to invest in business coaching with Dale Beaumont’s Business Blueprint. I learned crucial skills in CRM development, marketing, website optimization, and business compliance. With these tools, I quickly expanded from 40 to over 700 brokers in a year, partnered with mortgage associations, and attended broker Professional Development days.

Today, Credit Fix Solutions is a leading credit repair firm in Australia, known for exceptional service and recognized with awards, including ‘Most Loved Allied Service Provider’.

What motivated you to pursue a leadership role within the mortgage sector, and how has your journey been as a woman in this industry?

I never aimed to be a leader; my focus was ensuring finance brokers had a trustworthy resource for credit repair. I wanted to address the industry’s reputation for upfront fees and unfulfilled promises, a mission that I still pursue.

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, especially starting in my early 30s, I faced challenges, including skepticism about my business. I’ve worked hard over the past decade to earn respect and prove my reliability.

While my progress might have been faster if I were a man, I can’t say for sure. I’ve built a network of trusted colleagues and believe that women must lead by example, setting standards and acting rather than just talking about change.

Who have been your role models or mentors throughout your career, and how have they influenced your leadership style?

Dale Beaumont of Business Blueprint has been crucial to my success since 2015, and I wouldn’t be where I am without his coaching. Peter White of The FBAA has been a supportive mentor and friend, offering invaluable guidance when I was new to business.

Hank De Jonge of De Jonge Read taught me essential skills like financial foretelling, and his help was pivotal, especially when I initially didn’t understand basic financial concepts. Anja Pannek of The MFAA and Janine Allis of Boost Juice Bars are key role models for me.

Richard Branson’s disruptive approach also inspired me to create a flat, collaborative team culture at Credit Fix Solutions, where everyone is valued equally and no one is more important than another.

As a leader, what core values do you prioritize in your organization, and how do they reflect in your team’s culture?

Our core values—’Help, Learn, Grow’—are based on the credo that our team developed in 2021. While I initially didn’t understand the concept of core values, I knew I wanted to help people. As our business has grown, these values have evolved and are now deeply embedded in our team culture.

HELP

Whatever we do in the business we focus on what we can do to help!

LEARN

We hope to educate through everything we do within the business, for ourselves, our referral partners and our clients

GROW

It is better to be green and growing than ripe and rotting! If we’re not growing, then what good are we doing?

HONESTY

We believe that honesty is the best policy. We have a strict ‘no bullshit’ code when it comes to business!

WHAT WE DO SAYS WHAT WE ARE

We live by our actions. Everything we do, we do intentionally, and we do for good. What’s good for our clients is good for us and the world

WE SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF

Detail! We are big on it! We obsess on getting things right the first time. We practice what we preach and deliver on our promises to ourselves, each other, our referral partners, and our clients.

RESULTS MATTER

We are here to deliver as promised. We are accountable and diligent with our work.

BENEFICIAL

Whatever we do, we make sure it will benefit ourselves, our team, and our business.

WE HAVE FUN

We hustle. But we know exactly when to let go of all logical thought and just have fun.

Enough said.

What strategies have you implemented to empower other women in your organization and the broader mortgage industry?

In my organization, women are respected and encouraged to learn and grow. I ensure they feel hard and address any concerns promptly. Through my Business Blueprint coaching program, employees can explore various business aspects at their own pace.

We regularly assess job satisfaction and create a supportive environment where everyone feels valued. Recognizing that my team spends more time at work than with their families, we maintain regular catchups and celebrate daily successes.

I also support the Women’s Commercial Finance Forum and actively network with female professionals, focusing on building genuine connections and serving as a role model for younger women in the industry.

Can you discuss a challenge you faced as a leader and how you overcame it? What lessons did you learn from that experience?

Public speaking was initially challenging for me as CEO. I used to over-prepare and memorize every word but would still go blank on stage. I struggled to find my own style by mimicking others.

Over time, I learned to focus on my confidence and knowledge, speaking naturally rather than memorizing. This shift greatly improved my public speaking. I realized that self-doubt and imitation were unnecessary; being genuine and confident in my own style was more effective. People see through imitation and appreciate authenticity, so being myself was enough.

What trends do you foresee shaping the mortgage industry in the coming years, particularly regarding women’s roles?

Women are increasingly becoming primary decision-makers in home purchases and are rising to senior roles in the mortgage industry. This trend will likely continue, leading to mortgage products that better cater to women.

A balanced representation of both men and women is essential. There’s also growing support for women’s financial education, which should enhance financial literacy programs and empower women, particularly those recovering from financial abuse or domestic violence. Additionally, AI advancements will bring efficiencies, particularly benefiting women juggling careers and family by streamlining mortgage applications and offering virtual consultations.

How do you believe the mortgage industry can better support and promote female leadership?

Current leaders in the mortgage industry generally support female leadership, though some outdated views persist. As the older generation retires and younger professionals advance, the industry will naturally evolve to better support and promote women. My colleagues and I are committed to this progress, and I see it as a positive, ongoing development.

What do you consider your most significant achievement in your career to date, and why does it hold such importance for you?

My greatest achievement is founding and growing Credit Fix Solutions into a respected credit repair firm in Australia. This is important to me for two reasons. First, the business has helped thousands of families achieve financial stability, aligning with my goal to aid others on their wealth creation journey.

Each successful client outcome reaffirms why I started this venture. Second, building Credit Fix Solutions has demonstrated my resilience and capacity for growth, both personally and professionally. Despite industry challenges and competitors’ practices, I take pride in offering a valuable service that supports both consumers and mortgage brokers. This journey has allowed me to grow, inspire, and help others, which I cherish every day.

How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal life, and what advice would you give to others striving for that balance?

Work-life balance is essential for everyone, whether you’re an employee or a business owner. To manage it effectively, build structure by using a calendar to plan tasks daily, weekly, and monthly, so you know what needs to be done each day, saving time and reducing stress.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help and delegate tasks—consider hiring a part-time virtual assistant if needed. Set clear boundaries by disconnecting from work at a specific time, like 6:30 pm, and reserve days for personal time. Manage household chores during workdays to avoid weekend overload.

Lastly, be kind to yourself, enjoy small moments of happiness, and focus on your progress rather than comparing yourself to others. Surround yourself with supportive people, and remember that balancing your time is an ongoing process crucial for your long-term happiness and success.

What are your aspirations for the future, both personally and for your organization, in terms of advancing women in the mortgage industry?

I hope to advance women in the mortgage industry, making it a necessity for a more innovative and inclusive sector. Personally, I aim to deepen my expertise in credit reporting and repair, staying ahead of trends to inspire other women with lifelong growth and learning.

For Credit Fix Solutions, I envision it becoming Australia’s leading credit repair firm and a key resource for credit reporting advice and education, especially for vulnerable communities. I’m also considering developing it as a social enterprise with the help of grants.

My goal is to inspire women to excel personally and professionally, and to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive finance sector. I’m committed to paving the way for future female leaders in finance.

Risk is not just about threats; it’s about opportunities too.” – Sharmyn Powell. In the high-stakes world of central banking, where every decision can have far-reaching consequences, Sharmyn Powell stands as an alarm of calm and strategic brilliance. As the Chief Risk Officer of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), she has carved a path of excellence, directing the complex sector of risk management with precision.

Her journey to the pinnacle of her profession began with a solid foundation in chartered accounting. Her analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail soon propelled her into the realm of risk management, where she found her true calling. It was no surprise when the ECCB recognized her exceptional talents, promoting her to the coveted role of Chief Risk Officer in 2016.

Under Sharmyn’s leadership, the ECCB has undergone a transformative shift, adopting an enterprise risk management (ERM) framework that has become the cornerstone of its operations. Her influence extends widely across the bank as she spearheaded the creation of “Talking Risk,” a publication that simplifies the concept of risk management and fosters a culture of risk awareness throughout the organization.

But her impact doesn’t stop there. As the Chairperson of the Bank’s Fintech Working Group, she has played a pivotal role in navigating the complex world of financial technology, ensuring that the ECCB remains at the forefront of innovation while mitigating potential risks. Her strategic vision and collaborative approach were instrumental in the successful launch of the DCash Pilot, an innovative initiative that positions the ECCB as a trailblazer in digital currency.

With her extensive expertise and enthusiasm, Sharmyn has transcended the boundaries of her role, contributing her invaluable insights to various committees and initiatives within the ECCB. Her achievements have solidified her reputation as a true titan in the field of risk management, a leader whose influence extends far beyond the Caribbean region.

Below are the interview highlights:

Can you provide a brief overview of your journey in the field of risk management and how it has shaped your professional trajectory?

Having served in various capacities across the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) over 20 years, I was appointed as the Chief Risk Officer at the ECCB in September 2016. In assuming this role, I had responsibility for the development and implementation of the Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) function.

Although there were existing risk management practices across the bank, they followed a more siloed approach, which was not fully effective. In this new role, I had the opportunity to develop the Bank’s ERM Policy and Framework including the Bank’s Risk Appetite Statement (following consultation with the Board of Directors), the risk management process, and risk reporting tools, as well as establish the risk reporting structure. Having developed the function, I then had the responsibility of implementing it across the bank.

My appointment to the role of Chief Risk Officer was the beginning of a very insightful journey in risk management. It allowed me to gain significant exposure to a wide range of business areas as I engaged in extensive research and interactions to inform the development of the framework. I also gained a deeper understanding of the various departments’ operations across the bank as part of the ERM implementation.

As the process evolved, this new assignment catalyzed the advancement of my career through an expanded professional network and presented opportunities to enhance and share my knowledge through various forums and assignments both within the bank and externally. It also helped tremendously in improving my professional maturity.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in risk management, and how have those influences impacted your approach to the field?

As a certified accountant, the concept of risk management was part of my DNA, as I already had an analytical mindset and a focus on details. However, the actual shift away from accounting to full-time risk management was precipitated by the bank’s decision to establish an ERM function.

Governor Antoine expressed his confidence in my suitability for the assignment based on the recommendations received as well as our interactions since his assumption of office early in 2016. I was also encouraged to ‘take on the challenge’ by the then-Managing Director, Mrs. Jennifer Nero, who was confident that my formal training in accounting as well as my years of experience at the bank had adequately prepared me for the role.

I recall the response from the former Governor, the late Sir K. Dwight Venner, when I informed him that I had been appointed as CRO; he commented, “That is no surprise; you are more than prepared for that role.” He then said, “You are now in the boys’ club,” referring to the book that he had gifted me on his departure from the bank, ‘Breaking into the Boys’ Club: 8 Ways for Women to Get Ahead in Business.’

In considering this new opportunity, I was also influenced by my passion for interrogation, getting things right, and ‘thinking outside the box’ when executing tasks. Admittedly, the inherent downside of being ‘unpopular’ in light of the natural intrusive nature of risk management was not overlooked, but given my years of experience, particularly at the management level of the bank, I felt prepared for the challenge. The support I received from the bank’s executive throughout the journey, particularly in the earlier years, as well as various colleagues across the bank, together with exposure to formal risk management training and opportunities for interaction with other risk professionals worldwide to gain new perspectives and mature as a professional, have also been major contributors to my success.

Reflecting on your career, what are some key milestones or achievements that you consider defining moments in your journey?

My first major achievement as CRO was the drafting of the bank’s risk appetite statement and ERM policy and framework, which were reviewed and endorsed by an external consulting firm that had a well-established risk management program.

Given the intricacies of the bank’s operations and the importance of these documents in defining the success of the ERM function, this was very challenging. Having implemented the framework, the expressions from the Executive Committee and Board Audit and Risk Committee on the utility of this new function also underscored its positive impact.

The creation of the animated series “Talking Risk” is also one of my treasured achievements. This was a 12-week print series that I authored to help staff better understand the risk management process using everyday examples that people could identify with. The initiative was applauded at all levels across the bank and is still regarded as a key tool for people to gain a better understanding of risk management.

My appointment as the Chairperson of the Bank’s Fintech Working Group, which was charged with the development of a digital version of the EC currency, is one of my most notable achievements to date and has been a game changer in my journey as a risk professional. Although the role was not one that solely involved risk management, my experience as Chief Risk Officer was a key determinant in the selection.

In this role, I was required to apply my knowledge and skills to the management of all key risk areas to ensure the proper execution of the project. Most importantly, the bank’s reputation had to be closely guarded throughout the process, and the management of this key risk area remained at the forefront. The historic launch of the DCash Pilot in March 2021 was a major achievement and a significant milestone in my journey. This particular assignment not only deepened my experience in risk management but also created a wide range of new opportunities, including speaking engagements, appointments to committees with international participation, and recognition in various media, which have significantly expanded my reach as a professional.

In the dynamic field of risk management, challenges are inevitable. Can you share a significant challenge you faced and how you navigated through it?

The most significant challenge for me as a risk manager has been changing the risk culture at the organization. The proverbial ‘resistance to change’ necessitated the implementation of various measures to advance the process. One such intervention was the utilization of an external consultant to assist with the implementation process as persons tend to be ‘more receptive’ to such strategies.

In addition, one-on-one sessions were held with each department across the bank to provide a deep dive into the risk management function, highlighting individual and collective roles and, most importantly, reinforcing the benefits of risk management in improving overall productivity. The reliance on the Executive Committee to set the ‘tone from the top,’ requiring managers to embed risk management in their departments’ work programs, was also a measure used to overcome the challenge. It remains a work in progress as we navigate the continuous changes in the risk landscape.

What innovative strategies or approaches do you employ in risk management to adapt to evolving threats and uncertainties?

We have assigned Risk Liaisons in each department with responsibility for the coordination of their departments’ risk functions in collaboration with the management team. This improves accountability and provides a single point of contact in each department to advance risk matters.

There is also a robust process that requires departments to conduct ongoing surveillance of the operating environment and risk landscape relative to their respective work programs and identify any emerging risks that require attention. The establishment of a Risk Management Committee with management representation from all departments has also proven beneficial in ensuring consistency in the process and a comprehensive review of all existing and potential risk areas.

How do you foster collaboration within your team and across departments to ensure a comprehensive and effective risk management framework?

Regular team meetings and capacity-building sessions are the main tools used to build cohesion within the risk department. This also allows for knowledge sharing and continuity in the event of absences. Across the bank, the risk management department arranges annual one-on-one sessions with departments to discuss the bank-wide risk management function as well as matters specific to their department.

However, additional sessions may be convened at the request of the risk management department or an individual department. Risk Liaisons are also exposed to capacity building sessions as deemed necessary, in addition to ongoing cross-collaboration.

How would you describe your leadership style, especially in the context of risk management, and how has it evolved over the years?

My leadership style is generally one that is inclusive, taking into consideration all perspectives, allowing different ideas to contend and augured well in advancing the risk management function, and garnering the necessary support and cooperation.

However, as I became more entrenched in the role of Chief Risk Officer and the risk management function expanded, it was necessary, in some instances, to adopt a more ‘focussed’ approach to advance critical tasks and ensure key risks were effectively mitigated and loss to the bank was minimized. The key has been finding the right balance and having the professional maturity to know when to adjust.

When faced with critical decisions related to risk, what factors weigh most heavily in your decision-making process?

Given the nature of the bank’s operations, its roles and functions, and its heavy reliance on moral suasion in its interactions with various key stakeholders, any major negative impact on the bank’s reputation can have significant downstream effects. Consequently, the effective management of reputational risks is always at the center of all critical risk decisions.

How do you incorporate emerging technologies into your risk management strategies, and what impact has this integration had on the efficiency of risk mitigation?

We are constantly seeking innovative ways to improve the risk management process. Having started with Excel templates as the tool for risk reporting, we were able to make modifications and adjustments to ensure the relevant data was being collected.

However, the collation of these reports is an arduous task and introduces inefficiency in the process. We therefore continually explore new technologies that can automate the process, allow for more proactive responses to risk issues, and bring us closer to the vision of having a real-time enterprise view of the bank’s risk landscape. We are hoping to implement a new Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) solution in short order to achieve this vision.

Beyond your organization, how do you contribute to the advancement of risk management practices within the broader industry or professional community?

Having successfully implemented the ERM function at the bank, I have been invited to share my expertise with other central banks and private sector institutions that are seeking to implement and/or enhance their risk management functions. I also serve on the Audit and Risk Committee of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee.

More recently, I have also been able to apply my knowledge of risk management in the execution of my duties as a secondee at the Bank of International Settlements Innovation Hub (BISIH). These opportunities have propelled me to a new level of being regarded as a leading risk professional who could assist in advancing other organizations.

The Orthodontic Virtuoso Redefining Dentofacial Excellence!

“A smile is the best makeup that can change your looks and your heart.” – A simple yet profound statement. We’ve all experienced the magnetic pull of a warm, genuine smile. It has the power to light up a room, make a stranger’s day, and even transform how we feel about ourselves. The act of smiling is an innate, universal language that transcends cultures and borders, connecting us on a fundamental human level.

But what happens when you’re reluctant to share your smile with the world? Perhaps it’s because of crooked teeth, misaligned bites, or other dental imperfections. When our dental aesthetics hold us back, it’s easy to miss out on the magic that smiles create. This is where orthodontics comes into play, offering a range of solutions to correct misaligned teeth, irregular bites, and jaw issues. These treatments aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re about enhancing your self-esteem and overall well-being.

Below are the highlights of the interview:

Could you please tell about yourself and what motivated you to embark on this sector?

Well, I would describe myself as a friendly, fun-loving person and a passionate orthodontist by profession. During my early years, I was always interested in a career that would have a positive impact on an individual’s life. As I grew up, I understood that dentistry, specifically orthodontics, enhanced a person’s smile, instilling positivity and confidence. I realized the transformative power of orthodontic treatment, not just in terms of aesthetics but also in improving dental function and preventing oral health issues. This led me to pursue extensive training and education in this field while constantly staying updated with recent advancements. Today, I am privileged to lead a team of dedicated professionals who strive to deliver exceptional dental care and create lasting smiles. I also feel very fortunate to practice in Qatar, where I can help people from different continents.

Could you please brief about your company and its inception story?

Dr.A-Ligner CAT (Clear Aligner Therapy) was born out of a passion for transforming smiles and improving the lives of patients. With a deep understanding of the impact that a confident smile can have on an individual’s self-esteem, overall well-being, and inaccessibility due to financial restrictions, I set out to create a solution that would revolutionize the field of orthodontics.

My journey began with a vision: to develop a clear aligner system that would combine cutting-edge technology with exceptional patient care and affordability without compromising on the effectiveness of the treatment. Drawing upon my collective expertise and years of experience in orthodontics, I meticulously researched and developed my proprietary clear aligner system. My team worked tirelessly to design a product that would provide precise tooth movement while ensuring optimal comfort and convenience for our patients.

My entrepreneurial journey began when I decided to invest in a medical center that has a rich history and a commitment to excellence. Recognizing the immense potential for transforming healthcare services, I seized the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. From the very beginning, I understood that my role as an entrepreneur was not just about financial investments and being a partner, but about envisioning a better future for our patients and the community we serve.

What challenges have you personally faced as a woman leader in the business world, and how did you overcome them?

I have always cherished being a woman, and of course, when it comes to the business world, like any woman leader, I too often face stereotypes and biases that can undermine one’s abilities. To overcome this challenge, I had to prove my capabilities through consistent performance, showcasing my expertise, and challenging gender biases through education and awareness.

It was also hard to find a mentor who could guide me through my career. I had to find my way out and swim against the tide, but the constant moral support from my husband, Dr.Paul, who is an Emergency Physician, kept me going. His demanding specialty encouraged me not to look at the clock.

My mother-in-law, Dr.Cynthia Pandian, has been and will always be my role model. By observing her as a Vice-Chancellor of a reputed university, I was able to develop leadership qualities.

Achieving work-life balance was another challenge, but by setting clear boundaries, delegating tasks, and prioritizing self-care, I could handle it. Additionally, I established a support system at work and home to create a balance that allowed me to excel in both areas. When I began my journey, I always had self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I was fortunate to have a family that celebrated my successes and was surrounded by a supportive network that believed in my abilities. I had to practice self-compassion and remind myself of my worth and capabilities.

How do you see women contributing to the transformation of businesses? Can you provide any specific examples or case studies?

Women have unique perspectives and experiences, which can lead to more innovative and creative solutions. Women leaders often excel at creating inclusive and collaborative work environments. Women in leadership roles serve as role models and mentors for aspiring professionals. Many female leaders are passionate about social issues and corporate social responsibility. This focus on social impact not only benefits communities but also enhances the reputation and brand image of businesses.

I would like to mention Ms. Mary Barra, who became the CEO of General Motors in 2014, making her the first woman to lead a major global automaker. Under her leadership, General Motors has undergone a major transformation, focusing on electric and autonomous vehicles and investing in new technologies.

What advice would you give to aspiring women leaders who are looking to make a positive impact and drive transformation in their respective industries?

My mother always tells me, “Be Humble and Believe in Yourself!”

My advice to aspiring women would be, “Embrace your strengths, acknowledge your worth, and cultivate a positive mindset” that empowers you to take on challenges and overcome obstacles. Always seek growth opportunities. This may involve taking on challenging projects, seeking out mentors or coaches, attending industry conferences or workshops, or pursuing relevant educational or professional development programs.

Remember to build a network. Cultivate a strong professional network both within and outside of your industry. Seek out mentors and role models who can provide guidance, support, and inspiration. Be a continuous learner and advocate for yourself. Don’t shy away from promoting your achievements and showcasing your skills. Develop your brand and ensure that others are aware of your capabilities and potential.

Finally, the most important one is to be resilient. Leadership journeys often come with challenges and setbacks. Develop resilience and learn to bounce back from failures or disappointments. Use setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth, and don’t let them deter you from your goals. Stay true to your values, lead with integrity, and embrace your unique strengths and perspectives as a female leader.

Looking ahead, what do you envision for the future of women leaders in driving business transformation, and what steps do you believe need to be taken to further empower and support them?

The future of women in driving business transformation looks promising. As we continue to progress towards gender equality and recognize the value that diverse leadership brings to organizations, more opportunities are opening up for women to take on leadership roles and drive change. Here are a few steps that can further empower and support women leaders in this pursuit:

  • Foster Inclusive Work Environments
  • Provide Mentorship and Sponsorship Programs
  • Focus on Skills Development
  • Promote Visibility and Recognition
  • Support Networking Opportunities
  • Encourage Diversity in Boardrooms
  • Advocate for Equal Pay and Opportunities

By implementing these steps and continuing to break down barriers, we can create a future where women leaders play a pivotal role in driving business transformation and fostering inclusive and successful organizations.
