Under Sharmyn’s leadership, the ECCB has undergone a transformative shift, adopting an enterprise risk management (ERM) framework that has become the cornerstone of its operations. Her influence extends widely across the bank as she spearheaded the creation of “Talking Risk,” a publication that simplifies the concept of risk management and fosters a culture of risk awareness throughout the organization.

But her impact doesn’t stop there. As the Chairperson of the Bank’s Fintech Working Group, she has played a pivotal role in navigating the complex world of financial technology, ensuring that the ECCB remains at the forefront of innovation while mitigating potential risks. Her strategic vision and collaborative approach were instrumental in the successful launch of the DCash Pilot, an innovative initiative that positions the ECCB as a trailblazer in digital currency.

With her extensive expertise and enthusiasm, Sharmyn has transcended the boundaries of her role, contributing her invaluable insights to various committees and initiatives within the ECCB. Her achievements have solidified her reputation as a true titan in the field of risk management, a leader whose influence extends far beyond the Caribbean region.

Below are the interview highlights:

Can you provide a brief overview of your journey in the field of risk management and how it has shaped your professional trajectory?

Having served in various capacities across the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) over 20 years, I was appointed as the Chief Risk Officer at the ECCB in September 2016. In assuming this role, I had responsibility for the development and implementation of the Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) function.

Although there were existing risk management practices across the bank, they followed a more siloed approach, which was not fully effective. In this new role, I had the opportunity to develop the Bank’s ERM Policy and Framework including the Bank’s Risk Appetite Statement (following consultation with the Board of Directors), the risk management process, and risk reporting tools, as well as establish the risk reporting structure. Having developed the function, I then had the responsibility of implementing it across the bank.

My appointment to the role of Chief Risk Officer was the beginning of a very insightful journey in risk management. It allowed me to gain significant exposure to a wide range of business areas as I engaged in extensive research and interactions to inform the development of the framework. I also gained a deeper understanding of the various departments’ operations across the bank as part of the ERM implementation.

As the process evolved, this new assignment catalyzed the advancement of my career through an expanded professional network and presented opportunities to enhance and share my knowledge through various forums and assignments both within the bank and externally. It also helped tremendously in improving my professional maturity.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in risk management, and how have those influences impacted your approach to the field?

As a certified accountant, the concept of risk management was part of my DNA, as I already had an analytical mindset and a focus on details. However, the actual shift away from accounting to full-time risk management was precipitated by the bank’s decision to establish an ERM function.

Governor Antoine expressed his confidence in my suitability for the assignment based on the recommendations received as well as our interactions since his assumption of office early in 2016. I was also encouraged to ‘take on the challenge’ by the then-Managing Director, Mrs. Jennifer Nero, who was confident that my formal training in accounting as well as my years of experience at the bank had adequately prepared me for the role.

I recall the response from the former Governor, the late Sir K. Dwight Venner, when I informed him that I had been appointed as CRO; he commented, “That is no surprise; you are more than prepared for that role.” He then said, “You are now in the boys’ club,” referring to the book that he had gifted me on his departure from the bank, ‘Breaking into the Boys’ Club: 8 Ways for Women to Get Ahead in Business.’

In considering this new opportunity, I was also influenced by my passion for interrogation, getting things right, and ‘thinking outside the box’ when executing tasks. Admittedly, the inherent downside of being ‘unpopular’ in light of the natural intrusive nature of risk management was not overlooked, but given my years of experience, particularly at the management level of the bank, I felt prepared for the challenge. The support I received from the bank’s executive throughout the journey, particularly in the earlier years, as well as various colleagues across the bank, together with exposure to formal risk management training and opportunities for interaction with other risk professionals worldwide to gain new perspectives and mature as a professional, have also been major contributors to my success.

Reflecting on your career, what are some key milestones or achievements that you consider defining moments in your journey?

My first major achievement as CRO was the drafting of the bank’s risk appetite statement and ERM policy and framework, which were reviewed and endorsed by an external consulting firm that had a well-established risk management program.

Given the intricacies of the bank’s operations and the importance of these documents in defining the success of the ERM function, this was very challenging. Having implemented the framework, the expressions from the Executive Committee and Board Audit and Risk Committee on the utility of this new function also underscored its positive impact.

The creation of the animated series “Talking Risk” is also one of my treasured achievements. This was a 12-week print series that I authored to help staff better understand the risk management process using everyday examples that people could identify with. The initiative was applauded at all levels across the bank and is still regarded as a key tool for people to gain a better understanding of risk management.

My appointment as the Chairperson of the Bank’s Fintech Working Group, which was charged with the development of a digital version of the EC currency, is one of my most notable achievements to date and has been a game changer in my journey as a risk professional. Although the role was not one that solely involved risk management, my experience as Chief Risk Officer was a key determinant in the selection.

In this role, I was required to apply my knowledge and skills to the management of all key risk areas to ensure the proper execution of the project. Most importantly, the bank’s reputation had to be closely guarded throughout the process, and the management of this key risk area remained at the forefront. The historic launch of the DCash Pilot in March 2021 was a major achievement and a significant milestone in my journey. This particular assignment not only deepened my experience in risk management but also created a wide range of new opportunities, including speaking engagements, appointments to committees with international participation, and recognition in various media, which have significantly expanded my reach as a professional.

In the dynamic field of risk management, challenges are inevitable. Can you share a significant challenge you faced and how you navigated through it?

The most significant challenge for me as a risk manager has been changing the risk culture at the organization. The proverbial ‘resistance to change’ necessitated the implementation of various measures to advance the process. One such intervention was the utilization of an external consultant to assist with the implementation process as persons tend to be ‘more receptive’ to such strategies.

In addition, one-on-one sessions were held with each department across the bank to provide a deep dive into the risk management function, highlighting individual and collective roles and, most importantly, reinforcing the benefits of risk management in improving overall productivity. The reliance on the Executive Committee to set the ‘tone from the top,’ requiring managers to embed risk management in their departments’ work programs, was also a measure used to overcome the challenge. It remains a work in progress as we navigate the continuous changes in the risk landscape.

What innovative strategies or approaches do you employ in risk management to adapt to evolving threats and uncertainties?

We have assigned Risk Liaisons in each department with responsibility for the coordination of their departments’ risk functions in collaboration with the management team. This improves accountability and provides a single point of contact in each department to advance risk matters.

There is also a robust process that requires departments to conduct ongoing surveillance of the operating environment and risk landscape relative to their respective work programs and identify any emerging risks that require attention. The establishment of a Risk Management Committee with management representation from all departments has also proven beneficial in ensuring consistency in the process and a comprehensive review of all existing and potential risk areas.

How do you foster collaboration within your team and across departments to ensure a comprehensive and effective risk management framework?

Regular team meetings and capacity-building sessions are the main tools used to build cohesion within the risk department. This also allows for knowledge sharing and continuity in the event of absences. Across the bank, the risk management department arranges annual one-on-one sessions with departments to discuss the bank-wide risk management function as well as matters specific to their department.

However, additional sessions may be convened at the request of the risk management department or an individual department. Risk Liaisons are also exposed to capacity building sessions as deemed necessary, in addition to ongoing cross-collaboration.

How would you describe your leadership style, especially in the context of risk management, and how has it evolved over the years?

My leadership style is generally one that is inclusive, taking into consideration all perspectives, allowing different ideas to contend and augured well in advancing the risk management function, and garnering the necessary support and cooperation.

However, as I became more entrenched in the role of Chief Risk Officer and the risk management function expanded, it was necessary, in some instances, to adopt a more ‘focussed’ approach to advance critical tasks and ensure key risks were effectively mitigated and loss to the bank was minimized. The key has been finding the right balance and having the professional maturity to know when to adjust.

When faced with critical decisions related to risk, what factors weigh most heavily in your decision-making process?

Given the nature of the bank’s operations, its roles and functions, and its heavy reliance on moral suasion in its interactions with various key stakeholders, any major negative impact on the bank’s reputation can have significant downstream effects. Consequently, the effective management of reputational risks is always at the center of all critical risk decisions.

How do you incorporate emerging technologies into your risk management strategies, and what impact has this integration had on the efficiency of risk mitigation?

We are constantly seeking innovative ways to improve the risk management process. Having started with Excel templates as the tool for risk reporting, we were able to make modifications and adjustments to ensure the relevant data was being collected.

However, the collation of these reports is an arduous task and introduces inefficiency in the process. We therefore continually explore new technologies that can automate the process, allow for more proactive responses to risk issues, and bring us closer to the vision of having a real-time enterprise view of the bank’s risk landscape. We are hoping to implement a new Governance Risk and Compliance (GRC) solution in short order to achieve this vision.

Beyond your organization, how do you contribute to the advancement of risk management practices within the broader industry or professional community?

Having successfully implemented the ERM function at the bank, I have been invited to share my expertise with other central banks and private sector institutions that are seeking to implement and/or enhance their risk management functions. I also serve on the Audit and Risk Committee of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee.

More recently, I have also been able to apply my knowledge of risk management in the execution of my duties as a secondee at the Bank of International Settlements Innovation Hub (BISIH). These opportunities have propelled me to a new level of being regarded as a leading risk professional who could assist in advancing other organizations.

Presently the Head of Legal GULF Countries at Novartis, Riham is an accomplished lawyer with a distinguished career. She co-founded the Egypt In-House Counsel Group, a community of legal professionals in Egypt. A group that gathers more than 500 in-house counsels in EG for sharing learning, vacancies, better use of time, job opportunities, and improving efficiency and resources of the in-house lawyers in EG.

Journeying to the Top

Riham has extensive experience working in legal leadership positions. She currently leads the legal team for the GULF region. Previously, she served as the Country Head of Legal for Novartis Egypt, overseeing all legal matters for the company’s various divisions.

Before joining Novartis, Riham held legal positions at the Arab International Bank (AIB) and Credit Lyonnais Bank (CLB) & GULF Bank in Kuwait. Her background also includes experience as a French interpreter and a law trainee.

Riham is a highly qualified lawyer. She is also the country representative for the American Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) and a member of the Egyptian Bar Association.

In her own words, Riham is an Egyptian born in France. She holds a “Maitrise” de Droit Des Affaires from the University of Paris-I Pantheon Sorbonne and a Bachelor of Arts in Egyptian Law from Cairo University.

Succeeding Early

When asked what challenges she had to overcome to reach where she is today, Riham says that the challenges were her mindset, understanding and recognizing her biases, and turning those challenges into opportunities. “When I started my first role in the Pharmaceutical industry, I was the first female to take over the legal role, the youngest among the leadership team. Instead of positioning it as a challenge, I saw it as an opportunity.”

Riham was determined to leave a strong legacy from day one, build trust within the team, and pave the way for whoever will take over her role when she leaves. Smiling, she says, “Currently, I am enjoying my new role with the GULF markets, having an opportunity to work with more diverse teams and learn from everyone around me: I strongly believe that teachers are here everywhere!”

Sharing their vision and mission in Novartis, Riham says, “Our vision and mission are to become the most valued and trusted medicines company in the world. And I am really proud and privileged to be part of the team in Novartis, and we genuinely practice in our day-to-day work!”

Riham is a big fan of diversity and inclusion. She says it’s a key strategic goal to understand different perspectives and personalities and encourage all working styles to be heard and engaged!

Combining D&I to Foster Innovation

Innovation is key in a rapidly changing market. In Riham’s view, diversity and inclusion are key contributors to innovation, along with creating a culture where everyone can speak their minds! Riham says that diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences bring unique insights and ideas to the table. Diversity fosters creativity, problem-solving, and innovation by challenging conventional thinking and the status quo.

Diversity also comes as an outcome of creating an inclusive environment where all voices are heard and valued. Encouraging active listening, empathy and respect for different opinions. It comes with building a culture of trust and psychological safety, too. “As I mentioned earlier, the Pharma industry is very dynamic, and innovation is needed to sustain business and growth, not only from a Research and Development font but for everyone working in this industry to be able to unlock opportunities and expand access to patients to the right medicines,” she states.

The Maximum Impact

Further enlightening on the impact that she has made with her work through her expertise in the market, Riham says, “For people who know me, I genuinely do things from my heart, and I am keen to make an impact. I think the fact of shading light the role of in-house counsels in Egypt to understand their contribution to key business success, either by contributing to Returns on Investment (ROI) via assessing the right deals to be implemented correctly or assessing possible risks along with other key functions to avoid material or reputational risk. It is worth mentioning that only when we started building our in-house community in Egypt did in-house counsels start to be smoothly enrolled in the Egyptian Bar Association! I am proud.”

An Emergent Caliber

As a women leader, Riham faced challenges regularly. Like many, she played different roles throughout her career: as a daughter, a sister, a wife, or a mother; each stage needs certain flexibility that might change from time to time. The challenge of frequent travels or attending meetings during weekends or in the afternoon might be a challenge for a female who has to leave her family for a long time. “I always had the right support from family and friends to help me manage different challenges.” Choosing the right employer that values impact and the presence of the right calibers within the organization. The culture is about understanding challenges, and designing solutions/flexibilities to assist the right talents to deliver is really important, too.

A Joyful Wisdom

In her advice to women venturing into the industry, Riham says, “Always be ready to:

  • Deal with complexity. The Pharma industry is under high scrutiny in most MENA markets. 
  • Get yourself familiar with essential medical terms.
  • Understand your company portfolio and key indications for key strategic products.
  • Challenge status quo: Pharma is a very dynamic industry. One solution can not fit all😉.”

Finally, when asked where she envisions herself to be in the long run and what are her future goals for her company, Riham says, “Continue leaving a strong legacy, educate and upskill self and teams, stop low added value work are my current goals. Ultimately, you decide what makes you comfortable and ready to take on any challenge. Dr. Hellweger champions women navigating this demanding field while staying true to themselves.

Dr. Hellweger’s advice goes beyond law, offering words of wisdom for aspiring professionals, especially women. She says, “Find your niche, something you truly enjoy and are passionate about. Focus on your strengths and use them to your advantage. Don’t get discouraged by areas that need improvement; everyone has them. Keep learning and exploring new things. Pursue hobbies outside of work, like art, travel, or sports. These passions can become unexpected assets, giving you skills and knowledge others in your field might not have. Can you provide a brief overview of your professional journey and your company’s contribution to the business world?

We worked on developing software that allows redesigning (in a very easy and fast way) all documents and papers used in daily work into electronic documents and keeping the same design at a minimum, in addition to a workflow to automate daily work and move to electronic work.

What differentiates us from major international companies operating in the Middle East? Our applications ensure a hassle-free digital transformation in a short time (without any opposition from the end user) and support 100% Arabic.

We also provide customized solutions according to the customers’ requests so that we guarantee them a digital transformation without any issues or challenges, regardless of their type. In a commercial sense, this topic has provided us with a unique business opportunity and a wide market that includes about 22 countries and a population of approximately 473 million people.

Who has been your greatest source of inspiration in your career, and why?

Our scientists during the period of the distinctive Islamic civilization, and the reason for naming our company name is after the House of Wisdom in Baghdad (one of the most important scientific houses that were established in Baghdad), and I am a defender of the use of our Arabic language, and I wanted to offer something for this great language that exceeds in technical capabilities in all languages of the world, this distinction and great potential for it requires additional work for programming companies to benefit from it, but Western companies will not invest in a language except by the return on investment, and this left gaps and issues that need solutions We worked to close them and provide solutions about them.

Can you share a personal leadership philosophy or guiding principles that have contributed to your and your company’s success?

  • Believing in the goal you seek to achieve and committing to work on it regardless of the difficulties and challenges (and there are many of them).
  • Vision and Strategy: I am committed to articulating a clear vision for the company and developing strategic plans to achieve our goals. This involves setting ambitious yet realistic objectives and empowering my team to innovate and execute effectively.
  • Continuous Learning and Improvement: I embrace a growth mindset, constantly seeking opportunities for learning and development, both personally and organizationally. I encourage experimentation and iteration, recognizing that failure is often a necessary step on the path to success.

Every leader faces challenges. What are some significant challenges you’ve encountered in your career, and how did you overcome them?

  • Financial challenges: Our business requires years of working through a team before reaching products that achieve commercial profitability, and the issue of funding has suffered. When we were looking for funding, many investors refused because our business was not clear from a commercial point of view and the extent of its return (especially in the development stages). We faced it with patience and sacrifices from our team and our families.
  • Challenges of innovation and change: We faced the difficulty of convincing customers of the concept of remote work; this culture was not widespread, but the Corona issue provided a real-life experience for the concept of switching to remote work.
  • Time management challenges and time pressures: We faced many situations where the customer required certain features in our system. In many cases, by working more and working later, it was solved, but in other cases, we were not successful.
  • Decision-making challenges: We encounter them by getting advice from others and specialists; the more the opinion is shared with others, the closer it is to the right one.

I gained international experience in the oil and gas industry, with operational and financial audits on all continents, and various intercultural experiences and after all these I chose entrepreneurship.

As soon as I returned to Romania, at the end of 2013, after a three-year commitment in the US, and 15 years of activity in the corporate environment, I took up the challenge to start a project in the entrepreneurial area. Being a competitive person, after almost 15 years of operational and financial business analyses – may be in the most complex business, the oil & gas industry – I set out to use the knowledge gained and try to combine the corporate principles with the entrepreneurial side, thus resulting in a hybrid business solution: planning and strategy on the one hand and communication and human dimension on the other.

International experience has helped me add to the professional portfolio a global understanding of the business environment: the Austrian thoroughness with the American pragmatism and optimism, the culture of Latin countries and the Middle East, the Asian reliability, the African pace of development, and, not least, the German fairness and British commitment.

In your view, what are the existing challenges faced by the public relations and communications consulting service providers in your region? And how are you strategizing your company’s operations to tackle them?

From my own experience, the lack of predictability is one of the biggest challenges for Romanian consulting firms. Even if the professionals in the field could predict the trends of clients, the market, and mainly the overall picture, very often they are not attentive to details such as cash flows, profit margins, financing, etc. Thus, to face these challenges, I think it is important that all consultants have a solid professional education.

Another challenge faced by them is monitoring the company’s performance by using a significant set of performance indicators. If entrepreneurs had in-depth knowledge about how to monitor performance and develop KPIs, it would be much easier to make good and quick decisions, identify ways to communicate values more effectively, and know what needs to be changed in their organization.

As an experienced leader, what would your advice be to those budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts aspiring to venture into the consultancy business?

First, I would like to assure all young entrepreneurs in the consultancy field, that to lay the foundations of a business with potential, they will have to believe in themselves and their idea. They must be authentic, invest in their professional development continuously, and not miss opportunities and challenges. For those enthusiasts aspiring to venture into the consultancy business, I would advise building a solid business plan, with clear objectives, development strategies, and forecasted budgets.

There is much important advice related to business management and continuity, but I strongly believe that the most important for a manager is, to be honest. Beyond any experience and management skills, colleagues feel that you are a fair person, before being a manager. You can influence and manipulate the team with excellent short-term results, but for sustainable success, any company manager must aim to work side by side with the team, be a teammate and therefore be able to inspire.

Another important aspect is to permanently communicate within the team and be prompt in answering requests. Any manager must do it and I have recently learned from an article, published on a professional platform, that the most demotivating factor for employees is the lack of prompt answers from management. Finally, in terms of responsibilities, I would refer to the culture of an entity. Beyond any deadline, periods with a heavy workload, and stress, I believe it is a must to permanently ensure respect in the group, cultivate a sense of humor, and not forget to discuss at least quarterly one-on-one with each colleague in your team.

The success of a company reflects in reaching the proposed targets and, through a well-structured implementation strategy, all the desired goals will be reached. For instance, at HIM Public Affairs, success can be measured by the feedback received from clients, by maintaining and developing long-term partnerships, and, finally, by the continuous professional development of each member of the team.

How do you envision scaling HIM Public Affairs’ operations and outreach in 2022 and beyond?

The first step for expanding the company’s operations, I think, is to increase our team by attracting professionals in the field in which we operate, people who fit our organizational culture, and who have the same perspectives as the other team members.

Now we have a wide range of services, which I believe we can improve. It is important for us to keep our perseverance and to organize our time very well so that we can manage as much work as possible.

For me, expanding the company means:
